Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu (1335 metres above sea level)

Upon arriving in Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport), a Visit Heaven Trek representative will meet you and help you transfer to your hotel by private bus. Enjoy a free evening to explore Kathmandu and recover from your jet-lag. Meet the Visit Heaven staff during a short pre-tour briefing before welcome dinner with Visit Heaven Trek team.

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing (1335 metres)

A half-day guided tour around Kathmandu city’s historical and cultural landmarks. Visit Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple, the most important sites of Buddhism and Hinduism in Nepal. Catch the playful antics of the monkeys and beautiful city views at Swayambunath temple. Get lost in Kathmandu’s old city bazaars, public squares, and former royal palaces at Durbar Square.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Bhulbule (840 meters/5 hrs drive/2¾ hrs trek)

Set off towards Besi Sahar (gateway to the Annapurna Circuit) by chartered vehicle from Kathmandu. A walk through Besi Sahar’s bazaar leads to a climb up a series of rocky steps. The trail with ups and downs makes its way through sub-tropical forests and rice paddies of Sera. Further along, traverse a long suspension bridge across the Khudi Khola and arrive today’s destination Bhulbule.

Day 04: Drive to Dharapni (1860/3-4 hours drive).

From Bhulbule, with the private jeep, we will further drive to Dharapani. The road is pretty bumpy and off as well. Enjoy the thrilling ride.

Day 05: Dharapani to Chame (2710 meters/6 hrs trek)

You have entered a valley made up of the virgin forest of fir and pine. Today peaks of Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Manaslu Himal can be sighted en route above the tree line. We walk through the tiny settlement of Tamang Besi and soon start climbing up at Lattemarang, Gradually the trail takes us to our night’s stop at Chame, the administrative headquarters of the Manang District.

Day 06: Chame to Lower Pisang (3240 meters/5 hrs trek)

From Chame, the trail crosses a side stream, then later the Marsyangdi river itself on a large suspension bridge. Then we walk through fields of barley and descends to a bridge to arrive at Bhratang, a Khampa settlement. From Bhartang, we pass deep forests. The trail continues on a steep ascent while climbing a ridge towards the upper Marsyangdi valley. On the other side of the ridge lies the lower portion of Pisang.

Day 07 :Lower Pisang to Manang (3540 meters/6 hrs trek)

On the way to Lower Pisang to Manag, the route traverses through different villages, including Bryaga, where the stone houses are piled on top of each other, each with an open balcony created by a neighbour’s rooftop. Here lies the largest Gompa, or Buddhist Monastery, in Manang, which has an outstanding display of statues, Thankas, and manuscripts estimated to be 400-500 years old. A short walk past chortens and mani walls and across a stream gets you to the flat, arid terrain of Manang.

Day 08: In Manang (3540 metres)

An acclimatise day in Manang. Hotels and restaurants have figured out what trekkers are looking for and hotel menus, to your utter surprise, consist of hamburgers and steaks. Spend the day in Manang acclimatising and rambling around the old part of the village, a compact settlement of 500 flat-roofed houses separated by narrow alleyways, set against the remarkable backdrop of Annapurna and Gangapurna less than 8 kilometres away.

Day 09: Manang to Yak Kharka (4018 meters/5 hrs trek)

Our trek now begins an ascent of almost 1500 metres up to the Thorung La area and rise up to climb out of the Marshyangdi valley. Leaving the large vegetation below, the route traverses through the scrub juniper and alpine grasses off the meadows where horses and yaks graze. Across a large stream which has its source at Chulu Peak and past ancient mani wall in serene grasslands, the trail reaches Yak Kharka, also known as Koche, where a visit to the yak herders’ camp in the late afternoon is usual.

Day 10: Yak Kharka to Phedi (4450 meters/4 hrs trek)

As we gain the largest elevation, with taking our time will gently ascent up to Phedi. At Phedi,we will have time to rest and acclimatise to the higher elevation we will encounter while going through the Thorung La Pass, the point of highest altitude on the Annapurna Circuit.

Day 11: Phedi to the Thorung-La Pass and to Muktinath (Up to 5416 meters/8½ hrs trek)

We will have to set off early in the morning to reach the Pass around mid-day. The trail becomes instantly steep after leaving Phedi but not hard to follow. 4-6 hours of ascending up the lead to the apex of the Pass, which is decorated with prayer flags, a chorten, and stone cairns built by travellers. The views of the Annapurna Himal from the pass are well worth the climb. Further, the trail descends steeply before reaching Chabarbu. From there we cross meadows, drops into a deep gorge, climbs out again and follows a wide trail to Muktinath, a pilgrimage site held in great respect by both Hindus and Buddhists.

Day 12: Muktinath to Kagbeni (Up to 3550 meters/3½ hrs trek)

After a hard previous day, a late morning start is in order for tired trekkers. For the religiously and culturally inclined, a visit to the highly revered and venerated Muktinath temple complex is rewarding. Refreshed, purified, and blessed, you descend out of Ranipauwa to Jharkot through farmlands and clusters of poplar trees. Beyond Jharkot, the trail descends gradually to Khingar. Further, we get your first glimpse of the Kali Gandaki river as it is met by the Jhong Khola. As we continue the left-hand trail leads to Eklaibhatti and one on the right leads to your destination of Kagbeni.

Day 13: Kagbeni to Marpha (2670 meters/5 hrs trek)

The trail follows the left bank of the broadening river bed upon leaving Kagbeni. After a suspension bridge and a couple of up-and-downs, the trail drops to the riverbed and stays there until you get close to Jomsom, the administrative headquarters of Mustang. It is better to pass the riverbed an hour or so before noon to avoid the daily winds that pick up the dust. Following the course of the Kali Gandaki River, pass by the deepest gorge in the world (6500 metres deep), and arrive in the village of Marpha, a Tibetan refugee resettlement centre that has organised flagstone streets which are renowned for its apple brandy, pie, and momo!

Day 14: Marpha to Kalopani (Up to 2590 meters/6 hrs trek)

Today we leave Marpha from its southern gateway with following Kali Gandaki to reach Tukuche. From there we walk along the west bank of the river and cross it via suspension before the trail leads us to Kobang.A paved path places us another bridge before arriving at Larjung. Traversing the riverbed, the trail gradually climbs to the meeting point of the Boxi Khola and Kali Gandaki. Further ahead, crossing the suspension bridge across the Kali Gandaki, the trail climbs sharply through forests of pine, cypress, and juniper to reach destination Kalopani.

Day 15Kalopani to Tatopani (1160 meters/6 hrs trek)

Say bye to Kalopani and descend to a bridge at Lete. Then we hike through the sub-tropical forest to Ghasa. The trail passes all the way through Pairo Thapla, Kopchepani, Rupse Chhahara (where a beautiful waterfall is seen), Dana, and a few teashops in Guithe, eventually entering into a lively settlement with several hotels and restaurants at Tatopani. Tatopani literally means ‘hot water’ in Nepali; the village derives its name from the hot springs near the river below the village. Wash your tired limbs with a dip in the hot springs in the afternoon at Tatopani.

Day 16: Tatopani to Ghorepani (2785 meters/8 hrs trek)

Ghorepani, ‘horse water’ in Nepali, is a traditional stopping place for horses, mules and ponies that carry loads between Pokhara and Jomsom to quench their thirst. And no wonder, being at the crossroads of many trekking routes in the region, a lot of travellers stop here to rehydrate themselves at one of the many inns the village.

Day 17: Ghorepani to Ghandruk (1025 meters/10 hrs trek)

An optional climb up to Poon Hill at 3195 metres in the early morning offers a stunning view of Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak at sunrise while breakfast awaits you at the teahouse. The trail is a comparatively easy-paced descent down a stone staircase through dense forests towards Ghandruk.

Day 18: Pokhara to Kathmandu (1335 meters/6 hrs bus ride or 45-minute air flight)

Travel back to Kathmandu overland to the see the green and fertile landscape of Gorkha and Dhading districts or enjoy spectacular mountain views by plane. In the evening, you will join the group dinner and drinks to celebrate your trekking success with Visit Heaven Trek.
